Meet Lauren Connolly, Shark Guardian Ambassador

Growing up in a landlocked area, my connection to animals was limited to the usual warm and fuzzy kind. However, this changed dramatically when I started working at an aquarium in my early twenties. For many in Cincinnati, this was their first chance to see a shark up close, and for me, it marked the beginning of a transformative journey. Like many, I had always been terrified of sharks, influenced by their portrayal as dangerous predators in movies like Jaws. But working at the aquarium and seeing these magnificent creatures daily helped me overcome that fear as I learned more about their true nature.

My role at the aquarium evolved from giving land-based presentations to donning a dive suit and delivering underwater talks surrounded by sharks. I often joke that I'm more comfortable speaking to an audience underwater with sharks than on dry land. Many of the sharks I encountered were rescues from the shark finning trade, which ignited a passion in me to advocate for these misunderstood animals. I became dedicated to challenging the misconceptions about sharks and showing people that these creatures have far more to fear from humans than we do from them.

Although I eventually left that role, my commitment to shark conservation remained strong. I had the incredible opportunity to join the University of Miami's Shark Research team for a day, helping with their satellite tagging efforts to track the migratory routes and residency patterns of species like Tiger, Hammerhead, and Bull sharks. This experience deepened my resolve to protect these incredible animals and reinforced my belief in the importance of shark conservation.

Today, as the founder of Wild Developments, I combine my love for wildlife art and adventure to inspire people to reconnect with nature. Our mission is to remind people of the natural world's beauty and why it deserves protection. Additionally, I partner with my husband in JL Aerial Views, where we provide high-quality drone imaging for various projects, including conservation efforts. Becoming a Shark Guardian Ambassador will allow me to continue sharing the vital message of shark conservation, bridging the gap between fear and understanding, and inspiring others to protect these incredible creatures. Stay wild!
